| NICE guidelines for treating back pain recommend the use of manipulation, as used by chiropractors, as safe and effective treatment. NICE - the National Institute for Clinical Excellence – is the government body that decides whether there is good evidence to recommend particular treatments for use in the NHS. BMJ backs chiropractic |

| "...chiropractic has been demonstrated to be more effective for the management of lower back pain than conventional hospital outpatient care" British Medical Journal, 2004. Lord Darzi also published a draft constitution setting out, for the first time, the rights of patients. He said: "This is about giving more clout to patients, more say to patients. "By measuring quality across the service and publishing that information for the first time, both staff and patients can work together to make better informed choices about their care." |

The Bone and Joint Decade 2000-2010 Task Force on Neck Pain and Its Associated Disorders published its 236 page review of the current research on neck pain in the journal Spine |

| The Task Force recommends that neck manipulation, acupuncture and massage are better choices for managing most common neck pain. Other useful approaches highlighted by the study are exercises, education, neck mobilisation, low level laser therapy and pain relievers. It does not recommend the use of neck collars and ultrasound. |
